A Message from Louisiana State Police

Far too often law enforcement officers across Louisiana witness the devastating effects of fatal and serious injury motor vehicle crashes involving teenagers. As a parent or guardian of a teenager, you can decrease the likelihood of your teen being involved in a crash by taking a few simple steps. This booklet is designed as a guide to assist parents and guardians on the proper way to teach teens to become defensive drivers, follow the Louisiana Graduated Driver’s License restrictions and help teens develop good habits as a driver and as a passenger.
The Louisiana Graduated Driver’s License laws include nighttime driving restrictions, passenger limitations and a ban on cell phone usage. When these laws are followed, you can significantly reduce the chances of your teen being involved in a motor vehicle crash. In addition, research shows that parents who model safe driving behavior and openly communicate with their teen on their expectations and potential consequences are key to developing safe driving practices. Now is the opportunity to teach proper driving skills and set the example in your household.
The Louisiana State Police is committed to keeping our roadways safe for all motorists. Please remember to buckle up all passengers, drive sober, obey speed limits and put the cell phones away. Our goal in Louisiana is “Destination Zero Deaths.” Together, we can achieve this goal and save lives.
