A Message to Parents and Guardians
On behalf of the NH Division of Motor Vehicles, I want to thank you for making safe driving a priority for you and the new drivers that you will be introducing to this next exciting chapter of learning how to properly and safety operate a vehicle.
Driving represents such an incredible freedom to be able to pursue many of the things that allow for a fulfilling life, such as traveling to see family and friends, maintaining a job, and visiting familiar places and exploring new ones. With this freedom comes great responsibility to ensure that the rules of the road are followed, so that drivers, passengers, and everyone sharing our roadways remains safe.
Taking the time to speak with your new driver about the information contained within this manual will help establish a strong foundation for making proper driving decisions and a mindset that is focused on being a courteous and safe driver.
By your taking the time to review this manual and familiarizing yourself with the DMV-provided Driver’s Manual, you will be provided with many “best practices” associated with teaching a new driver how to drive, and you will have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the current driving laws that exist in the State of New Hampshire.
Thank you again for taking on this role to help the next generation of drivers be successful and safe throughout their driving careers and for working to ensure that these new drivers always strive to “Be a leader on the roadway!”
Safe travels and all the best,
John C. Marasco

The New Hampshire Driver Education Teachers Association is excited to provide you with The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program manual.
This guide focuses on the critical role of the parent in the teen driver education process and encourages parents and teens to drive together in a variety of weather conditions and in unfamiliar settings, be it rural roads, highways, in cities and in other heavy traffic situations. The manual’s design provides important instructional modules which contain information on how and where to complete the lesson for maximum success. Allowing your teen to spend as much time as possible behind the wheel will increase the development of their driving skills.
The purpose of driver education is to instill safe driving habits that last a life time. By offering an enhanced supervised driving experience, we hope that parents and guardians will extend the supervised driving period beyond the state requirement of 40 hours.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teen deaths. Roadway safety in New Hampshire is dependent on the behavior of each individual driver. Your commitment to assist your child in maximizing this learning experience is commendable. The time you spend teaching your teen how to drive might just save their life.
The NHDETA is proud to be a partner in creating safer roadways for all of us.
