For the Love of Prevention: Training Safe and Responsible Drivers
If you’re reading this, you may be embarking on the exciting journey of training a new, younger driver. This is a big responsibility — we’re here to help!
At PEMCO, we believe in the power of prevention. When you’re equipped with the right information, you can prevent preventable accidents and even save lives.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, teen drivers crash nearly four times more per mile driven than drivers who are 20 years or older. You can help reduce this risk by modeling and encouraging safe driving best practices.
Before you hand over the keys, here are five critical tips for getting your teen driver started:
Wear a seatbelt – always. Even when riding in the backseat or in a rideshare.
Limit teen passengers. The more passengers in a car, the higher the risk — it’s a fact and the law prohibits or restricts teen passengers based on driver’s age!
Keep wireless devices turned off. Use wireless navigation and music systems in your car. Even better, leave wireless devices home (even hands-free) until age 18.
Pay 100% attention to driving. If you’re tired, emotional, stressed, or under the influence of any substance, don’t drive. To avoid feeling rushed — a big distraction! — give extra time for your journey.
Limit nighttime driving. Driving at night adds extra risk — per IIHS, 20% of teen driving fatalities happen between 9 p.m. and midnight. Limit driving after 9pm to lessen this risk.
Driving is a big milestone for you and your young driver! By practicing and teaching prevention, you can help make the roads safer for your loved ones — and everyone.
